WHAT ARE DOMAINS?

To put it simply, domains represent the location of websites on the world wide web. Domains on the internet are governed by the Domain Name System (DNS) which is a hierarchical naming system for any online resources that are connected either to the Internet or to a private network.

A web page located on the internet is assigned a unique number (known as an IP address) which identifies the exact location on the server where it is held (For example the IP address for www.devoteddomains.com is 87.106.233.102). This IP address is not very human-friendly as is not memorable and bears no connection to the content of the website. The DNS helps by assigning a variety of information to each domain but more importantly it translates domains into domain names which are more meaningful to humans.
