WHAT IS AN INTRANET?

An intranet is similar to a website in appearance but functions as a private computer network that uses similar technology to the internet and enables the transfer of information regarding an organisations products, services or procedures. In most circumstances an intranet will feature a user access (login) system that will only enable authorised users to be able to get access to the information contained on the intranet as often the nature of the information will be sensitive.

Intranet's are often used for collaboration (to enable customers to work in groups and for telecommunications) or sophisticated corporate directories, sales, marketing and CRM (Customer Relationship Management) tools, project management, file sharing, newsletters and many other functions to improve productivity.
